Samaritan Jo™ Clematis is one of the popular Boulevard® series that has been bred to give summer long blooms. Samaritan Jo™ Have delicate silvery petals edged in purple that will seem to glow alongside other summer bloomers. This variety of Clematis prefers a more dappled shade to a fully shady position so that its petals do not fade. The growth may be more compact on this type of Clematis, but the amount of blooms throughout the season is tremendous.
Samaritan Jo™ is well behaved either growing on a trellis in the Cottage Garden or used as part of a mixed planting in a container. Imagine having a clematis blooming in your very shady front step. Like other clematis, Samaritan Jo™ attracts hummingbirds and bees like crazy.
Samaritan Jo™ Clematis Care
Clematis prefer to have a rich, moist, well drained soil. Growing Samaritan Jo™ in a container makes these requirements easy. When planted in the ground a thick mulch of organic compost keeps these vines happy through the summer. A soil pH from neutral to slightly alkaline is preferred. Fertilizing with a slow release, well balanced plant food early in the spring when new growth emerges will make for a sturdy vine with unending flower buds.
The Boulevard® series of Clematis are all in the pruning category 3. This means that the only pruning needed is in the early spring. When new growth appears, cut the vine back to one or two sets of buds. It may seem extreme to cut it this far back, but doing so ensures that there flowers all along the length of the vine, not just toward the top. All of the old branches can be removed to reduce chances of pests and disease that may have overwintered.
Samaritan Jo™ Clematis Spacing
Clematis are vining climbers that are much longer than they are wide. Samaritan Jo™ has a mature height of 4-5 feet and a width of 24 inches. When container planting, a pot larger than 24 inches is recommended. Planting clematis so that it can ramble through broadleaf evergreens such as Rhododendron is common and works great with this variety since all of the top growth will be removed in the spring.
