Sasquatch™ Dark Green Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis ‘V32’) is a fast-growing, deep green evergreen selected for cold climates and strong performance. Its dense, upright pyramidal habit reaches 20 to 30 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide at maturity, creating substantial privacy in fewer years than many comparable arborvitae. Because this selection produces very few cones, it directs more energy into vegetative growth, resulting in faster establishment and a fuller canopy. The foliage holds a rich green tone through winter with excellent resistance to winter burn.
Derived from a North American native species, this arborvitae combines adaptability with reliable hardiness down to Zone 2. In our coldest trial rows, it maintained uniform structure and color when other varieties showed stress. It tolerates heat, periodic drought once established, and some salt exposure. The narrow, upright form makes it ideal for screening, windbreaks, and long privacy hedges. It also works as a specimen tree in larger landscapes where year-round structure is needed.
Sasquatch™ Dark Green Arborvitae Care
Plant in full sun to part sun for best density and growth. It performs well in average, moist, well-drained soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, roughly 6.0 to 7.5, but adapts to clay or mildly alkaline conditions if drainage is good. Avoid persistently wet sites. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system, then provide supplemental irrigation during extended dry periods. Apply a controlled-release evergreen fertilizer in early spring if soil fertility is poor.
Pruning is rarely necessary, as the plant naturally forms a tight, pyramidal shape. If shaping is desired, lightly trim in late spring after new growth emerges. Avoid cutting back into bare wood. In colder regions, water deeply in late fall before the ground freezes and apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch to temper fluctuations in soil temperature and reduce winter stress.
Sasquatch™ Dark Green Arborvitae Spacing
For privacy hedges or windbreaks, space plants 6 to 8 feet apart on center to allow mature width while forming a solid screen. In large-scale mass plantings, allow >10 feet between trees for individual form to develop fully. Because of its mature size, this arborvitae is not suited to long-term container growing; use it as the structural backdrop in the landscape rather than as a patio specimen. If designing nearby plantings, pair with shade-tolerant understory shrubs or groundcovers, such as fothergilla, inkberry holly, foamflower, or barrenwort, which will not compete heavily for root space.
