Known for its extraordinary foliage and autumnal color, the Sassafras Tree is ideal for growing as an impressive specimen or to produce an informal hedge. It produces 3-lobed or oval leaves which begin a bright green before turning red, orange and yellow as the temperature drops in the fall. If that wasn’t enough, it also develops stunning and fragrant yellow flowers in the spring that transform to blue berries for the winter. Botanically called Sassafras albidum, it is more commonly known just as the Sassafras Tree. Loved by all manner of wildlife, the imposing Sassafras Tree can reach an eventual 30-60 feet tall by 25-40 feet wide.
The Sassafras Tree is deciduous and develops horizontal branches that show off its foliage. As a native tree to North America, it is suitable for growing in zones 4 through 9. Loved by many species of birds and butterflies when in flower, the Sassafras Tree is a great tree for attracting wildlife into the garden. As a stunning tree in its own right, it is often grown on its own. Being drought tolerant once established, this tree requires little ongoing care apart from simply being enjoyed.
Sassafras Tree Care
For the Sassafras Tree to thrive, it prefers to be grown in full sun or a little shade. Although tolerant of dry and sandy soils, it favors fertile and moist soil that is well drained. As this tree can grow in excess of 30 feet tall, care must be taken to site it away from any overhead obstructions. Deep and regular watering is required on planting and until established. An annual mulch of organic matter can be applied in spring to help conserve moisture and suppress any weeds.
The Sassafras Tree develops suckers, which if left to their own devices can form a small grove. However, if removed regularly, a single stem habit is easily achievable. No other routine pruning is generally required; however, any dead, damaged or misplaced branches can be removed as necessary.
Sassafras Tree Spacing
As a large tree with the potential to grow to 60 feet high and 40 feet wide, it should be planted far away from any building or structure. When grown as a single-stemmed specimen, the deciduous Sassafras can be underplanted with spring bulbs.
