Scarlet Heaven Itoh Peony is the rare truly scarlet peony, with single, wide-open blooms that show off a crown of golden anthers. It typically finishes around 2–3 ft. tall and 3–4 ft. wide, so it has the presence of a shrub without taking over a border. Compared with many double red peonies that hide their centers and can slump after rain, this one keeps its blooms on sturdy stems and continues to look crisp. We like it when you need one bold color note that doesn’t require staking or babysitting.
Itoh (intersectional) peonies combine tree-peony style foliage with herbaceous dieback in winter. Once established, Scarlet Heaven can set multiple buds per stem, which is why bloom stretches longer than a typical garden peony and why mature plants can carry a surprising number of flowers. The dark green foliage stays attractive well after bloom, giving you a full, tidy mound. It’s also commonly noted as deer and rabbit resistant and meant to live for decades.
Scarlet Heaven Itoh Peony Care
Grow Scarlet Heaven Itoh Peony in full to partial sun, aiming for at least 6 hours of direct light. A touch of afternoon shade is helpful in hotter areas to help the red petals hold longer. Plant in fertile, well-drained loam with a near-neutral pH around 6.5–7.0, and avoid heavy spots that stay wet. Set the crown shallow, with the eyes about 1–2 inches below the soil surface.
Water deeply after planting to settle soil, and keep moisture steady during active growth by watering when the top few inches dry out. Feed lightly in spring as shoots emerge with compost or a balanced fertilizer, and skip heavy feeding that pushes soft growth. After frost, Itoh peonies will die back for dormancy, and the plant relies on stored energy in the roots to power next year’s flowers.
After blooms fade, clip the spent flowers off down to where the leafy portion of the stem begins so the plant stays neat while keeping its foliage. In fall, cut back once leaves yellow and collapse, and remove debris from the area to reduce carryover disease. Itoh peonies prefer to stay put, so treat transplanting as a last resort.
Scarlet Heaven Itoh Peony Spacing
Space plants 3–4 feet apart to allow for mature width and better airflow around the foliage. For containers, use a 20–24 inch pot with excellent drainage so the root system can settle in for long-term performance.
In the garden, pair Scarlet Heaven with allium and iris to echo the peony’s strong structure with spring-to-early-summer companions. In pots, surround it with calibrachoa and lobelia to keep color going around the base after the peony’s main show.
