Growing Zones
This hosta is small in size but big on impact. It has blue-green to green intensely wavy leaves with wide creamy yellow margins. This perennial is typically grown solely for its lovely foliage. It does produce flower stems with lavender flowers that rise above the foliage in early to mid-summer. Add School Mouse Hosta to a full to part shade garden. It will survive in a wide range of USDA plant hardiness zones from 3 through 9.
Some gardeners remove the flower spikes from hostas. If you leave them alone, they’ll attract hummingbirds and bees. This miniature perennial has a spread of only 12 inches with a height of 8 inches. The 14-inch flower spikes will blossom above the foliage. School Mouse Hosta makes a pretty addition to the front of border gardens and at the base of shrubs. Its short, mounding habit lends it to the filler role in container gardens.
School Mouse Hosta Care
This adaptable perennial is easy to grow. It prefers moist soils. When grown in a shady location, School Mouse Hosta should only need watering during periods of drought. It prefers average to fertile soils. Add a balanced fertilizer in the spring and at the initial planting time.
Cut back the leaves in the fall after they have turned yellow and faded to tan. They will flop flat on the soil surface and turn to mush in late fall. You can wait until spring to rake them up if you run out of time in autumn.
School Mouse Hosta Spacing
Leave a minimum of 12 inches between individual species to allow for good air circulation and room for the roots.
