With its showy forget-me-not-like, pale blue and pink florets and heart-shaped silverish-green leaves, Sea Heart Forget Me Not provides interest from spring until fall. This easy-to-care-for herbaceous perennial, otherwise known as Brunnera macrophylla Garden Candy™ Sea Heart, and Siberian Bugloss, provides a beautiful accent to borders and beds. Even better than its fantastic sibling ‘Jack Frost’, Sea Heart Forget Me Not holds up better to heat and humidity and blooms earlier. It works well as edging and as a companion plant for shrubs such as roses. Cold hardy in zones 4 to 8, this variegated plant’s long list of positives makes it an attractive addition to any landscape.
Sea Heart Forget Me Not’s petite flowers captivate pollinators including bees, butterflies, and birds. Originating from Asia and Europe, this vigorous, clump-forming perennial is relatively disease resistant. Also, deer and rabbit resistant, you won’t lose sleep worrying about whether this lovely plant will still be around in the morning after the local raiders have sailed through your yard during the night. With its low maintenance regime, this showy perennial is an ideal plant to add to any busy newbie gardener’s collection.
Sea Heart Forget Me Not Care
Provide a space for Sea Heart Forget Me Not in partial shade; this plant does better in cooler locations. Plant it in soil that is loamy, moist, and well draining. If your soil lacks nutrients or does not drain well, you can amend the topsoil with peat moss/coco coir. Apply an inch or two of mulch to prevent water loss. While this showy perennial does well in a wide pH range, it prefers slightly acidic to slightly alkaline soil. To encourage better flower production and to discourage disease, provide this perennial with about an inch of water per week.
To encourage better flower production and discourage disease, deadhead Sea Heart Forget Me Not throughout the flowering season. Also, trim any diseased, damaged, or dead foliage from spring thru fall.
Sea Heart Forget Me Not Spacing
Sea Heart Forget Me Not works well when planted en masse or as a specimen. Uses include edging, ground cover, borders, beds, gardens, and containers. Space plants 12 to 18 inches apart. Combine this Brunnera with companion plants such as hydrangea, primrose, and hosta. This perennial can be used as a filler in a “thriller-spiller-filler” arrangement.
