Sea Urchin dwarf white pine is one to keep in mind if you are looking for a natural round shape with no pruning required. The extra long blue-green needles are surprisingly soft and silky giving this dwarf shrub an otherworldly look. The growth rate of Pinus strobus ‘Sea Urchin’ is extremely slow with the shrub reaching a maximum height and width of 3-4 feet in 10 years or more.
Dwarf conifers make great additions to a landscape, providing a wide variety of textures and shapes that are easy to care for and often require little or no pruning. These shrubs are incredibly hardy and able to grow in zones 3-8 with no winter protection needed. Deer, rabbits, and other small animal pests prefer to stay away because of their prickly needles and strong pine scent when branches or needles are crushed. Sea Urchin is at home in a dedicated dwarf conifer design, rock garden, or low-growing hedge along sidewalks or driveways.
Sea Urchin Dwarf White Pine Care
Planting dwarf conifers in acidic soil helps them retain their distinct needle color and remain healthy without heavy fertilization. Full to part sun is also important for good color retention and strong, compact growth. Just about any soil type is acceptable as long as it drains well. Dwarf conifers do not tolerate standing water at any time of the year and will languish over time.
Sea Urchin should be pruned in mid-summer and only on any current year’s growth. Heavy pruning into woody stems should be avoided, as regrowth will be slow and potentially distorted. Supplemental watering will be required at planting and until Sea Urchin is well established. To improve the shrub’s drought tolerance, apply a layer of finely shredded arborist chips, leaves, or compost, which will help the soil retain moisture longer during hot weather. The layer should be 2-3 inches, which will also help suppress weed growth.
Sea Urchin Dwarf White Pine Spacing
The round shape of Sea Urchin will reach a mature height and width of about 3 feet. Space multiple plants 4 feet apart or more between centers for good air circulation and to highlight the natural shape of this shrub. Grow Sea Urchin as a specimen in a pot that has at least an 18-inch diameter.
