Seasons in the Sun turns deep shade into a bright focal point with huge, clear yellow foliage. This hosta forms a bold, upright clump about 28 inches tall and 45–50 inches wide, appearing like a shrub in a perennial bed. The leaves feature gentle waves along the edges, and deep, stamped-in veins catch light and make the color look richer. Where many gold hostas wash out or get dull, this one holds that sunny tone with real presence. We often use it to “turn the lights on” in a shady corner.
The habit stays more upright than many giants, so it doesn’t sprawl into paths as quickly. In midsummer, flower scapes rise above the mound with near-white bells that bring in hummingbirds. The broad leaves are useful for hiding fading spring bulb foliage and covering bare soil in mixed shade plantings. This hosta handles urban conditions surprisingly well, which makes it an easy choice for front-yard shade.
Seasons in the Sun Hosta Care
Grow it in part shade to full shade, with a little morning sun to encourage the brightest gold without stressing the leaves. Plant the crown just at soil level and firm the soil around it so the plant doesn’t heave during freeze-thaw cycles. Hostas prefer humus-rich, moisture-holding soil that still drains, and this one performs well in a pH range of about 5.5–7.5. Water when the surface starts to dry, especially during heat, and keep the root zone consistently moist. A thin spring top-dress of compost often supplies enough nutrition; if growth is weak, use a light, balanced slow-release feed once as shoots emerge.
Trim off damaged leaves as needed during the season, and cut all foliage back to the ground after hard frost to reduce hiding places for pests. In early spring, watch for slug damage on the first unfurling leaves and address it quickly with slug traps. In colder zones, a light mulch helps prevent winter heaving, but keep it pulled back from the crown. Divide only when the clump becomes crowded or you want more plants—early spring is the easiest time.
Seasons in the Sun Hosta Spacing
Space plants about 4 feet apart so the mature mound can fully show off its width without overtaking neighbors. For containers, start with a 20–24 inch pot to accommodate the large root zone and to balance the large top growth. Try it near Solomon’s seal for arching contrast, pair with astilbe for summer plumes in the same light, or add sedge for a fine-textured edge that makes the gold foliage pop.
