Lavender is a must to include in any Mediterranean garden or rock garden planting scheme. The look of the silvery foliage and deep purple flowers is synonymous with climates that are hot and dry. Sensational!™ Lavender takes lavender to another level. This semi-woody perennial is extremely cold hardy, while at the same time does not wilt in a hot and humid climate. The bloom stems are extra stout and sport much larger bloom clusters than other varieties of lavender. Bees, butterflies and other insect pollinators go mad for Lavender in full bloom.
Sensational™ Lavender makes for a great cut or dried flower. This variety is good for culinary uses because there is a lower level of camphor in the leaves allowing the sweet scent of the flowers to shine through. Deer almost never browse Lavender and rabbits stay far away. Pests and diseases rarely bother Lavender. Their only issue could be root rots from being in waterlogged soils over the winter or in the summer. Extremely well drained soil is the key to helping Lavender perform at its best. Sensational!™ Lavender is a second generation of the Phenomenal Lavender, introduced in 2012. Phenomenal Lavender has proven to be the hardiest of any variety ever introduced. Sensational!™ Lavender carries on the tradition in a slightly more compact shape.
Sensational!™ Lavender Care
Sensational!™ Lavender needs as much sun as it can get. At least 8 hours a day of direct sun not only helps the bloms to be the largest that they can be, but increases the oils in the foliage and therefore increases the scent. Well-drained, but moist soil is essential, although Sensational!™ Lavender has shown some tolerance to wetter spots than other varieties. Average soil texture to a sandy loam produces the best root ball, although Lavender will tolerate sandy poor soils as long as they can have supplemental irrigation until fully established.
Pruning is as easy as a shearing back of the bloom stems at the end of the summer, being careful not to cut into the woody parts of the stems. Harvest the flower stems for drying as the flowers are just opening. Leaving the blooms as long as possible in the summer will provide pollinators with a steady stream of nectar late into the summer. Fertilizing is recommended early in the spring with a well balanced, slow release food.
Sensational!™ Lavender Spacing
Planting Lavender in large groups can be useful for erosion control on a slope, but it can also be a modern architectural feature for Urban container gardening. Sensational!™ Lavender has a mature height of 20-30 inches and a spread of 30-36 inches. Space plants at 30 inches on center when planting in groups.
