Growing Zones
Not only does the September Sun Hardy Kiwi produce stunning foliage, but it also develops edible fruits in the summer. Also known as Actinidia 'September Sun', this perennial vine can grow to a height of 15 to 20 feet and is perfect for screening. The green leaves are beautifully marked with pink and white shades. Small flavorsome fruits develop in summer if a male kiwi is planted nearby.
Easy to grow in the right conditions, the September Sun Hardy Kiwi is suitable for zones 3 to 9. Originally from parts of Asia, this perennial loves the heat and can cope with dry conditions. Furthermore, it is deer resistant. As a fast-growing vine, September Sun Hardy Kiwi is ideal for growing over a fence or over a pergola.
September Sun Hardy Kiwi Care
The best fruits and leaf markings are produced when it is grown in full sun. However, September Sun Hardy Kiwi will also tolerate partial shade. Regular irrigation to keep the soil moist is needed until it is established. This kiwi vine preferes fertile and well-drained soil. To give this vine a boost, you can add a layer of organic mulch in early spring.
The September Sun Hardy Kiwi is best pruned during the winter when it is dormant. Simply cut back overly long shoots to the desired length. Grow this female selection with a hardy male kiwi, like Red Beauty or Arctic Beauty, for fruit production.
September Sun Hardy Kiwi Spacing
When mature, September Sun Hardy Kiwi can reach a height and spread of 15 to 20 feet. If planting more than one kiwi to cover a long wall, a spacing of 15 feet apart will allow them to cover the space over time.
