Coral Bells (Heuchera) is one of the most popular perennials to grow. The foliage is bright and comes in a wide range of colors. Shanghai Coral Bells is part of the City™ series of Coral Bells. All plants in this series have superior foliage color and are just about the hardiest Heuchera available.
Shanghai Coral Bells blooms from May to September and never fails to attract local beneficial insects to your garden. The compact size of Heuchera makes it perfect for adding to the front of a cottage garden border or a butterfly and hummingbird garden. Coral Bells are resistant to most diseases and pests, although extra protection from slugs and snails may be necessary early in the growing season when the new shoots emerge. Add these perennials to a container of mixed seasonal plants. The foliage makes a great backdrop to spring bulbs, summer annuals, and winter evergreens.
Shanghai Coral Bells Care
Coral Bells will grow in soil with average texture and fertility as long as it drains well. Plants prefer full sun to partial shade and will easily grow at the edge of a woodland garden. Water when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. Either in the ground or a container, Heuchera likes to dry out a bit in between waterings. Fertilize with a granular, slow-release fertilizer with a balanced NPK ratio early in the spring.
Annual cleanup of these semi-evergreen perennials is best done at the end of winter. Cut back winter-worn foliage to the base of the plant and remove spent flower stems. To encourage a flush of fresh foliage, cut the whole plant back to 6 inches above the soil and mulch around the root zone with 2-3 inches of organic compost. Dividing will be required every 3-4 years. Divide clumps in half (or more) and replant as soon as possible to keep the roots from drying out.
Shanghai Coral Bells Spacing
Shanghai Coral Bells forms a very tight and compact mound 10 inches high and 12 inches wide. Space plants 10 inches apart when planting in multiples. Use a pot with at least an 8-inch diameter when growing in a container.
