The Sherwood Purple Creeping Phlox has a compact form and is not very tall, yet the showy flowers still command attention. Phlox stolonifera has star-shaped blooms with five petals in a lovely purple shade. Spring-time flowers bloom against a backdrop of dark green foliage. This beauty is low-maintenance and requires very little attention once acclimated.
This cultivar has an upright growth habit made up of densely branched stems. Creeping Phlox is a wonderful groundcover that can quickly fill in a bed or border while adding stunning springtime color. With time, the branches will cascade over the edge of a retaining wall or container or trim the stems to use the fragrant flowers in arrangements. Sherwood Purple Creeping Phlox grows as a perennial in USDA zones 5 through 8.
Sherwood Purple Creeping Phlox Care
Plant the Sherwood Purple Creeping Phlox in full shade to partial sun. Water weekly or when the top several inches of soil are dry. Water the soil around the plant when possible to keep the foliage dry and reduce the chance of powdery mildew. Plant in rich, moist, and well-drained soil and apply a balanced fertilizer each spring before new growth appears.
Pinch back spent flowers to encourage more blooms and maintain the shape. Prune during late spring or early summer if the stems become leggy. Propagate Phlox every few years as necessary.
Sherwood Purple Creeping Phlox Spacing
The Sherwood Purple Creeping Phlox is a spreading perennial that will reach 6 to 10 inches tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart or grow 1 to 2 plants in a 12-inch container.
