Lungwort, or Pulmonaria, typically blooms in shades of blue that tend to recede into the shady garden. Shrimps on the Barbie Lungwort explode in clusters of shrimp-pink flowers from late spring to early summer, giving the shaded garden a whole other mood. The dense foliage is highly mildew resistant and semi-evergreen in growing zones with mild winters.
Lungwort is an excellent groundcover for shady spots in the garden or as a filler for a mixed seasonal planter. The blooming time is relatively short, but the foliage provides interest for the rest of the growing season. Lungwort is deer resistant and rarely bothered by snails or slugs. Shrimp on the Barbie is a long-lived perennial providing many seasons of pleasure.
Shrimps on the Barbie Lungwort Care
Plant Lungwort in a partly shaded to a fully shaded spot. Provide well-draining soil of average fertility and texture. One inch of water a week will help the roots establish deeply in the ground. Wet foliage makes Lungwort more susceptible to mildew and fungal disease. We recommend using drip irrigation or soaker hoses to decrease the amount of water on the foliage. Fertilize early in the spring with a granular, slow-release, balanced fertilizer. Look for an NPK ratio of 10-10-10.
The best time to prune back Lungwort is after the first flush of blooms in the early summer. Cut the plants back to within 6 inches of the soil. This will clean up any ragged leaves and encourage fresh, vigorous foliage and a second late flush of flowers. Lungwort appreciates division every 2-3 years and does not aggressively self-seed.
Shrimps on the Barbie Lungwort Spacing
Shrimps on the Barbie Lungwort is a moderate grower that looks best when planted in multiples along a garden path or edging a perennial bed. The mature height is 8-10 inches with an 18-20-inch spread. Space plants about 18 inches apart from the center of each plant. Grow Lungwort in a container that has at least a 10-inch diameter.
