Silver Dollar® Blueberry will add a touch of the tropics to your garden. The rounded, silvery leaves resemble Eucalyptus and the berries have a hint of pineapple to them. What a great combination in an edible shrub that is already number one on most gardener’s lists.
Blueberry shrubs are great added to not only the edible garden, but the ornamental garden. Silver Dollar® is a compact variety that has beautiful silvery foliage that turns a brilliant emerald in the fall and lasts all winter. This is a late season cropper that helps to extend the harvest through the end of the summer. Large, sweet berries are enticing to both humans and birds. Make sure to cover the shrubs with bird netting well before the berries ripen if harvesting for the kitchen,
Silver Dollar® Blueberry Care
Silver Dollar® Blueberry will bloom and fruit the best when it is planted in a full sun spot. Shade either early in the morning or late in the afternoon is acceptable. The soil pH needs to be around 4.5- 5.5 for this acid loving shrub . A well drained soil and consistently moist soil will help the berries to reach their largest size.
Pruning will not be necessary often for this mounded, compact grower. A quick pruning in the late winter to clean up any dead, diseased, dying or diagonal branches will keep Silver Dollar® tidy. Fertilizing with a well balanced fertilizer for acid loving plants should be applied in the early spring just before the flowers appear. A slow released feed will give constant, even food to keep the shrubs growing healthy and strong. Mulching of Blueberries in the fall help to increase the organic matter in the soil. Over time this will help the soil become more moisture retentive, resulting in less irrigation needed during hot and dry spells.
Silver Dollar® Blueberry Spacing
Silver Dollar® Blueberry has a smaller shape than most Blueberries and would grow well in the garden as an edging plant or low, informal, edible hedge. Grown in a container is also a great idea. Since Silver Dollar® is self-fertile it could be grown as a single specimen in a small garden or on a patio or deck. Planting at 30 inches on center is recommended when planting in a large group.
