Butterfly and pollinator gardens are very popular and really do help to support critical species. Most people might not be aware that moths also need host plants to feed and raise their larvae. Silverrod White Goldenrod is one such plant that is a host for the Wavy-Lined Emerald Moth. This native plant is a form of Goldenrod that blooms late in the summer, providing not only foliage for the moths but also nectar for late-season foraging pollinators. This small but mighty plant should be included in any pollinator garden plan.
Silverrod is a narrow and upright-growing perennial with lovely dark green foliage for most of the summer. The small white-and-yellow flowers appear in clusters and make this Solidago the only white-flowered variety found on the East Coast of the United States. This plant is deer resistant and is rarely bothered by other pests or diseases. Solidago bicolor can be naturalized in wildflower meadows or kept in a more cultivated spot in the cottage garden.
Silverrod White Goldenrod Care
Plant Silverrod in a full-sun to part-shade spot with well-draining soil. This is one plant that appreciates heavy clay soil but does not mind lighter soil as long as it is not very rich. Silverrod prefers moist soil and does not like to dry out for long periods. This plant will require supplemental irrigation during hot weather or if planted in a dry woodland location. Mulching plants in the spring with 2-3 inches of compost is the only fertilizer needed for most native plants.
No pruning is necessary for this low-maintenance perennial. The top growth will die back in the winter. If left in place, this foliage helps to insulate the crown while providing shelter for local wildlife. Silverrod does not like to be divided or moved. Propagation by seed is the best way to multiply plants.
Silverrod White Goldenrod Spacing
The mature height for Silverrod is 1-3 feet with a spread of 12-15 inches. Space plants 12 inches apart to provide for good air circulation and soil coverage.
