Sky Pencil Holly is a distinctive Japanese holly with a crisp, vertical form that creates a tall evergreen accent. Ilex crenata 'Sky Pencil' grows upright in a pencil-like column, reaching about 6 to 8 feet tall and only 2 to 3 feet wide in many landscapes. Unlike most hollies, it has smooth, boxwood-like leaves rather than the traditional spiny foliage, giving it a softer look that works in both modern and classic landscapes. The small glossy dark green leaves stay neat through winter, making this shrub useful at entries, patios, and tight foundation corners.

This Japanese holly cultivar was found in Japan and later introduced by the U.S. National Arboretum. Sky Pencil Holly is an all-female selection, so small dark berries may appear in fall when a compatible male Japanese holly is nearby. Its naturally fastigiate habit needs little shaping, and the spineless foliage is easier to live with near walkways than sharper hollies. Plant it as a pair at an entrance, a slim privacy screen, a formal container accent, or a vertical counterpoint among lower rounded shrubs.

Sky Pencil Holly Care

Plant Sky Pencil Holly in full sun to partial shade, with some protection from harsh winter wind in colder zones. It prefers light, moist, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. Clay, loam, or sandy soil can work when drainage is reliable, but alkaline soil may cause yellowing foliage.

Water deeply after planting, soaking the entire root ball to settle the surrounding soil. The soil should stay evenly moist during the first growing season to establish roots. Established plants tolerate short dry periods, but they perform best with watering during extended heat or drought. Fertilize in spring with a slow-release fertilizer for broadleaf evergreens or acid-loving shrubs. Mulch 2 to 3 inches deep over the root zone, leaving open space around the stems.

Prune Sky Pencil Holly in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove dead or damaged stems, and lightly trim the sides or top only if you need to control height or maintain a tighter column. In Zones 5 and 6, plant in a sheltered location and refresh mulch before winter to help moderate root temperatures.

Sky Pencil Holly Spacing

Space Sky Pencil Holly 2 to 3 feet apart for a narrow hedge or privacy screen. Use 4 to 5 feet between plants when you want each column to stand separately as an accent. For containers, choose a sturdy pot at least 18 to 22 inches wide with drainage holes, since the upright form can catch wind on exposed patios.

Frame Sky Pencil Holly with rhododendrons or blueberry bushes in acidic beds where their broader habits contrast with the holly’s vertical shape. Sedge and Japanese forest grass can cover the lower layer in part shade to give the planting texture and a clean edge. In containers, use alyssum in spring or pansies in cool weather around the base for seasonal color beneath the evergreen column.
