If you are looking for an award-winning native plant for your pollinator or butterfly garden, look no further than Slender Mountain Mint. This perennial is part of the mint family and is native to the Eastern half of North America. Pycnanthemum tenuifolium attracts every sort of beneficial pollinator when in bloom and has the fresh smell of mint when brushed or walked upon. This is an easy-to-naturalize perennial that grows well in dry or wet (even boggy) soils.
Use Slender Mountain Mint in a meadow planting or any zone of a rain garden. The clusters of white flowers bloom from June to August and make great cut or dried flowers. The needle-like foliage can also be dried and used in teas or added to potpourri mixes. Slender Mountain Mint is very cold hardy and heat tolerant, making it low maintenance in any space. The upright and clumping nature of Slender Mountain Mint makes it useful for erosion control, waterside planting, or placement in an ornamental, sensory garden.
Slender Mountain Mint Care
Plant Pycnanthemum in just about any spot in the landscape. Well-draining soil is preferred, although this plant grows well in a boggy area. Any soil texture or pH is acceptable. Full sun will encourage larger clusters of flowers, while partly shady positions will keep the foliage a deeper green. Fertilizing is not recommended as this is a native herb. Mulching with organic compost or arborist chips will provide all the nutrition Slender Mountain Mint needs.
Deadheading is useful to help keep this member of the Mint family from self-seeding. Cutting flowers back just as they are spent also helps to encourage more buds to form. Slender Mountain Mint also spreads by underground rhizomes and is easily weeded to keep in bounds. Cut back any dead top growth from the previous season early in the spring. The foliage and flower stems are used by wildlife through the winter for shelter.
Slender Mountain Mint Spacing
The mature height and spread of this mint are 2-3 feet. Space plants 24 inches apart to provide quick ground coverage.
