Growing Zones
With its enormous white panicle blooms and blue-green foliage, the Snowcicle Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Snowcicle’) is an Oakleaf variety that provides year-long interest. This deciduous shrub boasts enormous blooms that are 12-14 inches long and appear bright white in the late spring or early summer. By the time fall rolls around, these blooms fade to pink and green, surrounded by leaves that pop with classic red and orange fall colors. This Oakleaf Hydrangea is shade tolerant and has sturdy branches, able to hold up its ample, long-lasting blooms through the summer without drooping like many of its relatives.
The Snowcicle grows best when watered regularly, especially through the hot summer months, and planted in well-draining, rich, acidic soil. Add mulch around this shrub to help the soil retain moisture and keep the roots moist. To grow the most blooms and achieve the best fall color, the Snowcicle should be planted in a spot where it can get at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight. Like other Oakleaf Hydrangeas, the Snowcicle is tolerant of dappled sun and afternoon shade, providing blooms to some shadier spots. When planted close together, the Snowcicle can be made into a beautiful blooming deciduous hedge.
Snowcicle Hydrangea Care
To plant the Snowcicle Hydrangea, dig a hole that is at least twice the width and equal depth as the root ball. This shrub will grow best in rich, loamy, acidic soil, so amend your soil as needed. Provide this shrub with regular water, never allowing the roots to dry completely, especially in its first year. Even when established, Hydrangeas need consistent moisture to be happy and healthy. While the Snowcicle will bloom best and provide the most fall color in 4-6 hours of sunlight, this plant may need afternoon dappled sun or shade in hotter climates to prevent damage to its flowers and leaves. This Hydrangea can benefit from application of a slow-release tree and shrub fertilizer or compost in the early spring.
Because the Snowcicle blooms on old wood from late spring through summer, avoid heavy pruning in the spring, as it may result in fewer blooms. Shaping and pruning can take place immediately after flowering in the late summer if necessary, though spent blooms can remain on the plant for winter interest if desired. Hydrangea flowers can be used as fresh-cut flowers when trimmed in the summer, or they can be dried either on or off the plant for use in bouquets and wreaths.
Snowcicle Hydrangea Spacing
At 4-6 feet tall and wide, the Snowcicle Hydrangea should be planted at least 6 feet away from other plants to avoid crowding. To create a Snowcicle hedge, these shrubs can be planted a bit closer together.
