Growing Zones
Snowsation Evergreen Candytuft sports large flowers with pure white petals and a peek of yellow that blanket the lacy dark green foliage on this low growing, ground covering perennial. Showing off some of the biggest blooms of any compact Evergreen Candytuft, Snowsation will impress you with its blizzard of white blooms in early spring. Very cold hardy, handling winter temperatures below zero, Snowsation will give gardeners in all but the coldest and hottest regions of the United States a beautiful show every spring.
Native to Southern Europe along the Iberian Peninsula, Candytuft grows in alpine conditions; dry, rocky/sandy soil, and thrives in full sun. Hardy in Zones 4-9, gardeners across the United States including coastal areas where it is somewhat salt tolerant can appreciate this vigorous perennial. Deer and rabbits typically won’t browse on it and it attracts bees and butterflies to its beautiful white blooms. Leathery strappy leaves are attractive in their own right, creating mounds of dark green foliage that stays green all year for winter interest as well.
Snowsation Evergreen Candytuft Care
Candytuft Iberis is an easy care perennial and Snowsation is no exception. Tolerant of a wide variety of soil types except heavy clay, it prefers a well draining nutrient rich soil. Soil pH variation does not bother it as it can handle acidic, neutral and alkaline soil with no significant problems. It is drought tolerant but performs best for you with a regular watering schedule, especially during the hottest months of summer. Light shade is tolerated but you will get much fewer blossoms. Fertilization is generally not needed, but a light application of well composted organic matter will be all you need to compensate for an extremely poor soil. This is truly a ‘set it and forget it’ perennial, only it is so showy you will not forget it. It's a real scene stealer!
Deadheading is not necessary, this compact perennial will keep pushing out flower after flower without intervention from you. After the spring flowering has ceased, cut back the plant up to ½ its volume to encourage branching and set the stage for even more flowers next spring. Winter protection in the harshest winters can entail dressing with a good pine mulch to protect the root zone, but this is generally not needed.
Snowsation Evergreen Candytuft Spacing
Candytuft grows only to 8 inches tall and spreads to 12 inches wide. Space your plants out 10 to 12 inches for best performance and to allow good air circulation. This small perennial makes an excellent ground cover, so plant several to get you started. They reseed freely, so you will have the beginnings of a major expansion naturally if you do not remove seed heads. Candytuft also serves as a wonder spiller in rock gardens and terraces, as well as an excellent inhabitant in a patio or porch container or hanging basket. You will be thrilled to have this tough, easy to care for, versatile evergreen perennial in your garden this spring!
