It’s hard not to fall in love with the striking good looks of the Soft Orange Coneflower. This Echinacea cultivar is a golden orange color that embodies summer. The long, elliptical petals bend back, exposing the brown seed cone. The flowers grow on branched stems that also feature dark green foliage.
Coneflowers have an upright, mounded growth habit, and they make a lovely addition to beds, borders, and mass plantings. Include in a mixed perennial bed to introduce color and texture or plant in a container so you can enjoy the blooms on a porch or deck space. The tall stems make for wonderful cut flowers. The Soft Orange Coneflower is deer-resistant and low-maintenance and grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 9.
Soft Orange Coneflower Care
Select an area that receives full sun to partial shade. This plant is adaptable but expect the best results when grown in rich, moist soil that is well-drained. Give this plant a drink when the top few inches of soil feel dry. Coneflowers are drought-tolerant, but water during a drought to ensure this beauty still blooms. Apply a light dose of balanced plant food or top-dress the soil with organic compost in the spring to promote prolific flowering.
Deadhead the plant to keep it looking nice and direct energy into new flowers. Growth can be cut back in the fall or after the first frost, or leave the flowers in place so the plant can self-seed and serve as a food source for birds.
Soft Orange Coneflower Spacing
The Soft Orange Coneflower will top out at 16 to 28 inches tall and reach 10 to 24 inches. Space this perennial 8 to 22 inches apart for a complete and dense look.
