Cypress is a beloved tree around the world thanks to its graceful lines and stately structure. False Cypress have become a widely sought after landscape addition for similar reasons. Add in the low maintenance and perfect height of the Soft Serve False Cypress and you have a real winner. Look to Soft Serve when you need the perfect ornamental evergreen conifer to add architectural interest to your landscape. The soft branches and shape are similar to a dwarf Alberta Spruce, but will be taller at maturity. The fine texture of Soft Serve is quite lovely, with a bright green hue that’s frosted in a silver-blue on the underside.
Soft Serve has a natural pyramidal shape that can grow up to 10’ tall – perfect when you need a tree that won’t overtake your space. This elegant shape lends itself well to privacy screens, hedges, borders, and as a specimen plant to lend vertical lines and year-round interest. Plus, it’s a hardy conifer that is salt tolerant, deer resistant, and adaptable to a variety of growing conditions in Zones 4a-8a.
Soft Serve® False Cypress Care
While False Cypress is an adaptable plant, it does have preferences. It prefers loamy, well-drained and lime-free soil with medium moisture and a pH between 5.6 - 6.2. Plant your Soft Serve in a location that gets at least four hours of sun per day. Protect it from harsh winter winds and sun if necessary, or plant in a space that is naturally buffeted from these winter elements. Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer for best performance. If you are familiar with caring for arborvitae, you will have luck using the same strategies with this False Cypress variety.
The naturally pyramidal growth habit of the Soft Serve False Cypress requires very little to no pruning. Prune once or twice after spring growth if desired. If you’d like to keep your Soft Serve smaller, you can prune in the summer to maintain desired size.
Soft Serve® False Cypress Spacing
The spacing of your False Cypress will depend on your pruning plans and overall landscape goal. If you plan on using it in multiples as a hedge or privacy screen, plant them 72” apart. If you are using it as a specimen plant in a landscape design, give it closer to 120” of space. At maturity, it will have a spread of 60-72”, so keep that in mind as you site your tree.
