Soft Touch Compact Holly makes a polished evergreen mound with smooth, glossy foliage. It grows about 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, with small green leaves marked by a pale silver mid-vein. Its soft texture makes it especially useful beside walkways, patios, and front entries where sharper hollies can feel too stiff. Our landscaper often uses Ilex crenata 'Soft Touch' as a boxwood-style edging plant with a gentler leaf feel.
This Japanese holly selection has a dense, mounding habit and moderate growth rate. Small white spring flowers are not showy, but pollinated female plants may produce black berries that persist into winter and offer food for birds. Soft Touch Compact Holly tolerates urban conditions, light drought once established, clay soil, and partial shade, though it performs best with good drainage. Use it for low hedges, foundation borders, containers, small-space accents, mass plantings, and tidy edges around specimen trees.
Soft Touch Compact Holly Care
Plant Soft Touch Compact Holly in full sun to partial shade, with some afternoon shade helpful in hotter climates. It prefers light, moist, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. Clay, loam, sand, and organic soils can all work when drainage is reliable and the pH is not too alkaline.
Water deeply after planting, then water once or twice weekly during the first growing season depending on heat and rainfall. Established plants need water mainly during hot, dry stretches, but they look best when the soil does not dry hard for long periods. Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer for broadleaf evergreens or acid-loving shrubs. Mulch 2 to 3 inches deep to conserve moisture and protect roots, keeping mulch away from the stems.
Prune Soft Touch Compact Holly in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove dead, damaged, or stray branches first, and make small shaping cuts to preserve the natural rounded form. Heavy pruning is rarely needed, but occasional light trimming can keep hedges even and containers compact.
Soft Touch Compact Holly Spacing
Space Soft Touch Compact Holly 18 to 24 inches apart for a low hedge or continuous border. Use 3 feet apart for individual rounded shrubs with visible space between plants. For containers, choose a pot at least 14 to 16 inches wide with drainage holes, and water when the top 2 inches of potting mix feel dry.
In foundation beds, let Soft Touch Compact Holly form the low evergreen layer, and place viburnum or sweetspire behind it for flowers, seasonal change, and a looser shrub outline. Coral bells and creeping liriope can fill the foreground in part sun, matching the holly’s preference for steady moisture and drained soil. For container groupings, pair Soft Touch Compact Holly with pansies in cool weather or begonias in warm shade.
