Coreopsis is one of the best blooming perennials for color and interesting foliage. Solanna™ Golden Sphere Coreopsis has a bright, cheery, fully double flower and is tolerant of heat and humidity. This sweet and sunny yellow flower keeps blooming all summer and will not stop until the first frost of fall. Sturdy flower stems mean no need for staking to keep it from flopping onto other plants.

Plant Solanna™ Golden Spheres at the front of a mixed perennial border. Alternatively, use it to edge a garden bed or spice up pots and planters as part of a mixed seasonal display. Coreopsis is a good choice for use in areas with a high concentration of deer. These plants are seldom browsed on and will quickly regrow if nibbled. Slug and snail protection may be needed early in the spring when the new foliage emerges. After plants reach their full size, these pests will move on.

Solanna™ Golden Spheres Coreopsis Care

Plant Coreopsis in full sun to part shade. An average soil texture with good drainage is key to a healthy root system. Adding compost to heavy clay soil will make it drain better and lighten the texture for roots to establish well. Water plants when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. As Coreopsis roots become established, the plant will easily tolerate short periods of drought.  Fertilize in the early spring by applying a slow-release granular formula for blooming perennials and shrubs to the root zone, and lightly scratch it into the soil.

Deadhead Solanna™ Golden Spheres Coreopsis regularly to prevent the plant from setting seed. Pinching to increase the stem density is not required as this cultivar naturally develops dense branching. Shearing the whole plant back by half in mid-June will encourage a second round of flowering and fresh growth of the foliage. Coreopsis growing in containers or hanging baskets may need this extra cutting back in summer. Clean up any dead top growth late in the winter before the new season’s growth emerges. Alternatively, the top growth can be reduced to within 6 inches of the soil late in the fall. Apply 2-3 inches of shredded leaves or compost to the growth crown for added insulation through the winter.

Solanna™ Golden Spheres Coreopsis Spacing

Golden Spheres is relatively compact. A height of 8 inches and spread of 12 inches makes this plant perfect for tucking into bare spots or pots. Space plants about 12 inches apart from the center. Container-grown Coreopsis requires a pot with at least an 8-inch diameter.
