Southern Wood Fern fills shaded ground with upright, arching fronds in a fresh light green. Thelypteris normalis, often listed as Thelypteris kunthii, quickly reaches about 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, spreading by rhizomes into a graceful colony. It is grown for foliage, since ferns reproduce by spores rather than flowers. Our landscape designer uses it under trees and along shaded foundations for texture, coverage, and a native Southern character.

This fern is native to the southeastern United States, with a range extending into Texas, the Caribbean, Central America, and northern South America. It handles heat, humidity, deer browsing, rabbits, heavy shade, moist soil, and periods of drier shade once established. In cooler climates, Southern Wood Fern is deciduous and may turn bronze before winter dormancy; frost-free gardens may keep it semi-evergreen. Plant it in woodland gardens, shaded borders, naturalized areas, slopes, pond edges, foundation beds, and mass plantings beneath open-canopy trees.

Southern Wood Fern Care

Plant Southern Wood Fern in partial shade to full shade, with morning sun acceptable when soil moisture is steady. It grows best in humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil but can adapt to amended clay, loam, sand, and silt. Slightly acidic to neutral soil is suitable, and this fern can also tolerate slightly alkaline conditions when moisture and organic matter are consistent.

Water thoroughly around the root ball at planting. Maintain even moisture while the rhizomes settle and begin spreading the first season. Established plants prefer regular moisture, but they can go dormant during drought and return when better conditions return. Fertilize lightly during the growing season with compost or a mild balanced fertilizer if the soil is lean. A layer of leaf mulch helps copy the woodland floor this fern prefers.

Cut back old fronds in spring after new growth begins to rise. Remove browned or damaged foliage at the base so the fresh fronds can open cleanly. Divide spreading clumps in spring when they move beyond their space, or allow colonies to expand where erosion control and ground coverage are useful.

Southern Wood Fern Spacing

Space Southern Wood Fern 24 to 30 inches apart for mass plantings, shaded borders, and groundcover-style coverage. Use 30 to 36 inches between plants when you want each clump to show more individually among shrubs or larger perennials. For containers, choose a pot at least 14 to 16 inches wide with drainage holes, and keep the potting mix consistently moist in warm weather.

In shaded woodland beds, combine Southern Wood Fern with Solomon’s seal and lungwort, which share its preference for filtered light and organic soil. Hostas' broader foliage can contrast the fern's  finer texture through the growing season. In containers, use wishbone flowers or impatiens around the edge for seasonal bloom in the same cool, moist setting.
