If we didn’t have you at “new clematis variety,” you’ll be convinced after a quick introduction to Sparky Pink. This is the latest, greatest clematis variety from Proven Winners ColorChoice that requires little-to-no maintenance. Sparky Pink greets the warmth of spring with rosy pink flowers that resemble its “Sugar Bowl” cousin at first, and then open into exotic spiky pinwheels that make garden visitors take a second look. These unique spring-blooming flowers bloom into the summer, providing show-stopping appeal on fences and trellises for weeks or even months.
Sparky Pink is a climbing clematis vine that can grow to be quite large, with prolific pink blooms and a hardy nature that resists disease. It is a great choice for growing over arbors, gazebos and pergolas to provide dappled shade beneath. It will also be a showstopper on any kind of trellis. Sparky Pink can grow up to 8’ tall, so make sure you give it a solid support system and room to shine.
Sparky® Pink Clematis Care
Like other clematis, this Sparky Pink variety likes to have its roots cool and shaded by mulch or neighboring shrubs, but requires sun on the vine for maximum growth. Plant this vigorous vine in a part-sun or full sun location near a structure that can provide support. If you plant it away from a support structure, add a stake upon planting.
Clematis requires good drainage and average soil fertility. An application of fertilizer or compost in early spring will support growth and bloom. Sparky Pink is in pruning group 1, which means it flowers on old wood. So no pruning is required. However, if you feel like a little clean-up is in order, a light trim after the spring bloom will do.
Sparky® Pink Clematis Spacing
A vigorous grower in the right conditions, your clematis could spread as much as 6-8’ by the time it reaches maturity. Space them about 6’ apart to allow room for this gorgeous clematis variety to shine.
