A beautiful, cheery mounding shasta daisy that flowers freely, Spoonful of Sugar Shasta Daisy will add a bright visual to your landscape border, cottage garden or patio container. Huge 4 ½ inch wide flowers grow on dark green foliage and create mum-like mounds of flowers from the ground up. They are stunning when planted in huge drifts in your landscape. Pairs beautifully with giardia and phlox, as well as many other tall flowers and grasses in your informal garden. Multiple layers of petals radiating from the bright yellow center bring a pop of sunshine to your landscape and shout that summer is here.

Originally bred by famed horticulturist Luther Burbank in the 1800’s, Shasta daisies have remained a perennial garden favorite for decades. Its most famous parent is the oxeye daisy, a native of Europe and parts of Asia that has naturalized all over the United States. Hardy in Zones 5 to 9, Spoonful of Sugar will soon be your favorite daisy for your perennial garden with their easy care and maintenance requirements.

Spoonful of Sugar Shasta Daisy Care

Grown in full sun for best flowering performance, Shasta Daisies prefers a slightly acidic to neutral well draining soil similar to those found in the meadows and prairies across the nation. You will want to treat these almost like a wildflower: water only when dry, fertilize only when in extremely poor soil and keep their heads in full sun. Too much fertilizer will cause a lush flush of foliage at the sacrifice of the beautiful flowers. Control weeds by applying a layer of mulch or compost in the spring. Shasta daisies prefer a soil pH of 5.8 to 6.2, an average garden soil. Good draining soil is key to disease resistance.

Deadheading is not necessary but may result in prolonged production of blooms. A second flush of blooms later in the season is not unusual. Pruning is generally not needed as this perennial maintains a compact mounding habit. Winter protection in marginal cold winter zones can entail applying a good layer of mulch to protect the root zone from the cold.

Spoonful of Sugar Shasta Daisy Spacing

Space your plants 28 to 32 inches apart for best air circulation. This compact perennial only grows to about 18 inches tall but spreads out a whopping 32 inches. Place it in the foreground of your garden bed for maximum effect. Shasta daisies make a wonderful landscape border and are frequently used as sidewalk or driveway edgings with great effect. Want a free flowering, easy care perennial that will bring you compliments all summer long? Plant Spoonful of Sugar Shasta Daisy in your garden this spring.
