This Spring Blue Moss Phlox is a wonderful perennial that will grow year after year, returning its bright blue, and purple hues to the landscape. Creeping in nature, it will spread during the season. For this reason, it makes a great retaining wall border perennial. For a pop of blue and purple during the late spring, and an evergreen ground cover the rest of the year, consider the addition of this creeping phlox variety.
This native phlox variety is extremely versatile in nature. It can be planted anywhere from raised beds, to a rock garden. It has a wonderful form to it, and after some time and growth provides a lovely fall-over feature to any container, raised bed, or wall. To add to the positive list of attributes it’s drought tolerant, and low maintenance. This phlox is a friend to pollinators and it attracts butterflies, hummingbirds and bees.
Spring Blue Moss Phlox Care
This perennial thrives in hardiness zones three through eight. It is flexible as far as sunlight is concerned, and prefers full sun, partial sun, or partial shade. It leans more on the side of water enjoyment, and prefers moist and well drained soil. It requires an average amount of water, so if a drought is observed, and especially if planted in a container it will require extra water.
Generally this phlox doesn’t need to be deadheaded, or pruned. It acts as a ground cover, blooming in the spring. Once the blooms are spent, they will fall off and the plant will remain evergreen. Trimming would only be necessary if you wish to maintain shape or length, but this could compromise its spillover effect.
Spring Blue Moss Phlox Spacing
The Spring Blue Moss Phlox only reaches four to six inches tall. However, it grows outward so this plant should be spaced 18 to 24 inches apart from others.
