Spring Celebrities Lemon Hollyhock, or Alcea rosea annua Spring Celebrities Lemon, packs a massive punch in a dwarf variety, and carries large, fluffy, 3-inch, pastel-yellow flowers that bloom along the length of the stems from late spring into midsummer. The Spring Celebrities is truly a blooming star with up to 75 semi-double to double flowers on a single stem. The foliage of this remarkable Hollyhock is dark green and mounded, adding additional color to your landscape. Spring Celebrities grow from 24 to 36 inches tall and have a compact spread of 12 to 18 inches.
Lemon Hollyhock has a small, tidy, vigorous growing habit, and is ideal for pots and containers. It is commonly used as a cut flower and is a favorite amongst florists and gardeners looking for a cottage-style burst of creamy yellow color. The botanical name “Alcea” means “to heal”, and the flowers of this gorgeous Hollyhock are completely edible and great in salads. It is cold and drought tolerant and attracts both bees and butterflies. They are fantastic for adding vertical interest in a mixed container.
Spring Celebrities Lemon Hollyhock Care
Spring Celebrities Lemon Hollyhock should be grown in full to partial sun. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil and needs good air circulation. If you water your Hollyhock just enough, it will stay shorter and more compact. Ample water will increase the height of the plant. When your Hollyhock reaches 3 feet in height, or you live in a windy area, you should stake it to support the plant, but this small wonder rarely requires staking.
It is susceptible to aphids and thrips, as well as rust. Watch your Spring Celebrities Lemon Hollyhock for signs of distress like leaf-tip browning and wilting.
Spring Celebrities Lemon Hollyhock Spacing
Your Spring Celebrities lemon Hollyhock should be spaced at least 6 inches apart in pots or containers, and up to 18 inches apart at planting. If you plant your Spring Celebrities Lemon Hollyhock in rows, the rows should be 3 feet apart to encourage adequate air flow. It makes an excellent patio or border plant and can be used as a “filler” or “thriller” in your mixed pot or container.
