The Staghorn Sumac is an ornamental shrub that introduces color and texture to a landscape. Rhus typhina is a native plant that features an upright, woody structure. The large, green, compound leaves are evenly spaced along the branches. The branches also feature reddish-brown hairs for additional color. Sumac is best known for the ornamental fruiting clusters in a deep shade of burgundy. When the weather turns cold, the foliage turns shades of yellow, orange, and red.
This tree-like shrub is large with an open form and can help define a space and create a woodland vibe. Sumac grows well in damp conditions, so it is a good choice for areas prone to flooding or near marshes or bodies of water. This perennial is low maintenance and can be grown in zones 3 through 8.
Staghorn Sumac Care
Plant the Staghorn Sumac in full sun to partial shade. The soil should be acidic and well drained. Apply a thick layer of organic mulch or compost around the base of the plant to retain moisture and provide extra nutrition. This plant prefers damp conditions and will require regular watering in drier soil. Feed Staghorn Sumac using a 6-2-4 fertilizer in the spring and fall.
Sumac has an excellent natural shape and will look its best with minimal pruning. Remove long shoots in the late fall or early spring. Dig up and remove suckers to allow the plant to thrive and prevent it from spreading.
Staghorn Sumac Spacing
This is a large, upright shrub with a tree-like form. Staghorn Sumac stands 15 to 25 feet tall, and the branches will reach 20 to 30 feet across. Space plants 25 feet apart to create a full and continuous planting.
