Searching for a continuous blooming flower for your garden? This is an easy to maintain perennial that will grace you with its blooms throughout late spring through mid-summer. Its dark green foliage supports dark purple buds that turn into lavender bell shaped flowers in a bushy form, creating a truly unique visual experience. This perennial is pollinator friendly and encourages visits from bees and butterflies. Stray vines are not an issue as it is herbaceous and grows upright from its crown-- without the need to climb anything in its path. Growing up to 38” tall and up to 36” wide, this perennial is a great focal point plant by itself.
Deer and rabbit resistant, your blooms will not be in jeopardy by hungry passersby. After blooming is over and the cold weather sets in, this perennial will die back down to its crown to prepare for another season of blooming. It can be used as a focal point within your garden, in containers, or as a border plant. Even better? The blooms are great for floral arrangements, making it a multipurpose perennial both inside and out.
Stand By Me Lavender Clematis Care
This perennial is hardy in zones 3-7. Find a spot in your garden where it will receive partial to full sun. Planting with average soil that is neutral or slightly alkaline will yield the best results for growth and blooming. Keeping the soil moist and not overly waterlogged will be sufficient, making this an ideal perennial for those looking for less upkeep. It is important to keep the crown and roots of the plant shaded. To achieve the necessary shading of the crown and roots, either place companion plants surrounding the root ball or mulch heavily. Mulching will also allow moisture to remain within the soil.
Pruning is recommended in the spring to prevent intertwined and unmanageable stems as new growth comes in. Trim all stems in early spring to about 3”-4” at the crown, which is the woodier part of the plant. Pruning in such a manner will delay blooming, however it will yield a better growth pattern. If you prefer to have spring blooms, simply prune about 6”-9” above well developed leaf buds each year in late winter or early spring.
Stand By Me Lavender Clematis Spacing
Whether you decide to plant this perennial as a border plant or as a focal point, spacing needs to be about 36” wide on center to allow adequate growing space. Within a container, the root ball needs to have sufficient space to allow new growth to come up. Planting other companion plants is great within containers, but take caution and give at least 20”-24” from the center of the root ball to prevent overcrowding.
