Standing Ovation™ Serviceberry, or Amelanchier Alnifolia Standing Ovation™ is a small deciduous tree, or large shrub, with three seasons of eye-catching, standing-ovation beauty. In the early parts of spring, woody stems and blue-green leaves support clusters of snowy-white star racemes. The sweet, purple, edible berries that occasionally follow in June can attract songbirds. Berries are followed by stunning crimson and orange fall foliage. These gorgeous serviceberries grow from 12 to 15 tall and have a spread of 3 to 6 feet. They are known for their crisp, upright, perfectly oval shape that remains through the winter.
Native to North America, Standing Ovation™ Serviceberry is great for many different types of landscapes. It is a multi-stemmed, upright option with a precise oval shape and moderate growth rate. Once established, it is a low-maintenance shrub. The early spring flowers attract pollinators of all kinds, and birds adore the summer fruit, so choose a site with lots of clearance. Deer and other critters will pass by this Serviceberry in search of tastier options. It is a leggy shrub that is great to plant under power lines and other areas with low clearance.
Standing Ovation™ Serviceberry Care
Standing Ovation™ Serviceberry should be planted in full to partial sun. It is fairly drought tolerant once it’s been established, but you should take care not to dry it out. It can thrive in a variety of different soils, so long as they have good-drainage. Keep the root ball of the plant sufficiently moist until the plant is well established and do not plant the shrub in a hole deeper than the soil line. To produce the maximum amount of berries, fertilize your serviceberry shrubs in early spring as the plant exhibits new growth.
Prune your Serviceberry in the late winter when extreme cold has passed. Standing Ovation™ does not require a lot of pruning and you should only remove crossing, crowded, or diseased branches.
Standing Ovation™ Serviceberry Spacing
Your Standing Ovation™ will look spectacular when planted against a contrasting background like an evergreen hedge or woodland, to show off their spectrum of colors. They make excellent under-plants, and excel alongside perennials and ground cover of all kinds. They can be planted en masse as borders and hedges, or as privacy screens or windbreaks. When planting, space your Standing Ovation™ Serviceberries 12 to 15 feet apart.
