This easy to grow evergreen can be planted just about anywhere. Steeds Holly, Ilex crenata 'Steeds', is known for its tolerance to temperatures well below zero and its dense bright green foliage that keeps its color all year long. It produces tiny white blooms transform into black berries for winter ornamental purposes. It can be pruned to shape regularly without being bothered.
Its dark green foliage is dense and attractive. The Steeds Holly is an evergreen and its color will be enjoyed year around. You will notice this Japan natives tiny white flowers in the late summer and though fall. Those blooms produce the ornamental black berries that remain intact through winter. This evergreen can tolerate temperatures up to negative thirty. It has an upright habit that reaches up to eight feet. The spread can reach six feet. It makes a great hedge, border plant, and wonderful for framing doorways. Plant for privacy purposes, or as a focal point for all year color.
Steeds Holly Care
The Steeds Holly loves the sun. Plant in full sun and ensure it receives at least six hours of sun per day. While it is highly adaptable, this shrub prefers slightly acidic soil. The soil must all be moist and well drained. During the first growing season water regularly and deep. Once established, it will be more tolerant to drier conditions. In the spring apply general fertilizer. Pruning regularly to shape is tolerated but not necessary.
Steeds Holly Spacing
For hedging purposes, spacing should be 2 feet, center on center when remaining under three feet tall. For taller hedges 3 feet, center on center, and 3 feet of clearance from other plants and structures is recommended.
