Growing Zones
A drought-tolerant succulent, Steel the Show Stonecrop Sedum provides colorful groundcover with little water or effort. In summer. Rosy pink flowers appear above blue-green foliage. And those flowers stick around until early fall. Even before the flowers emerge, this sedum offers plenty of benefits. The bright small leaves provide a touch of blue to break the plain green monotony of many plants. Plus, it covers the ground, helping to prevent weeds and to ease erosion on slopes.
Steel the Show performs well in zones 3 through 9, so it can take cold and heat and keep on going. Even though it grows low to the ground (about 6 to 8 inches high), rabbits are not attracted to the plant. Eventually, this perennial will spread to nearly 16 inches. It is a perfect rock garden plant, slope or terrace plant, and all-around stunning groundcover for garden beds. And when those summer blooms open, they attract butterflies to their rosy hues.
Steel the Show Stonecrop Sedum Care
Steel the Show loves to shine in full sun, so place the plants (after danger of frost has passed in spring) where they will receive at least 6 hours of sun per day. In the hottest zones, a little afternoon shade will not hurt. The plant does not need fertile soil, just soil that drains well in keeping with its low-water needs. Water it consistently after planting but not if the soil is already damp (the succulent’s leaves store water). Water seldom once established.
There is no need to fertilize your sedum, and overall care is simple. Add about an inch of compost at planting time and each spring; that is all the fertility the plant needs. In early spring, cut back any stems damaged during winter. You might need to divide the plant every few years in spring if it is outgrowing its area.
Steel the Show Stonecrop Sedum Spacing
For a solid and colorful ground cover on a slope or hill, plant several of these stonecrop sedums, spacing them about 12 to 14 inches apart.
