Growing Zones
The Stella d’Oro daylily is the most well-known and widely used daylily in history for good reason. Bright yellow star-shaped flowers appear on flower stalks from May through July or beyond. Like other daylilies, each flower on the plant lasts only one day. However, the bloom period of the cultivar is much longer than the typical daylily bloom period of just a few weeks. The lightly fragrant blooms are accented by attractive, clumping foliage.
This daylily is also exceptionally adaptable and thrives in even the toughest to grow spots. Group several plants together to form a mass planting or groundcover in sunny areas or use it as an edging plant or border. The Stella d’Oro stays more compact with less spreading than other daylilies, so it works as a specimen plant in mixed perennial gardens without threatening to overtake other plants. The Stella d’Oro even grows well in containers.
Stella d’Oro Daylily Care
The ideal sun for the Stella d’Oro is sun to partial shade. It tolerates and thrives in a range of soil types and under varied conditions but prefers a well-drained soil. Fertilize the plant regularly during the spring and while the plant is blooming to ensure the best summer performance. This daylily is drought tolerant but flowering will be best with consistent moisture. Apply a thick layer of mulch around the plant in the spring and aim for providing the plant with about an inch of water weekly via rainfall or irrigation.
Cut flower stalks back to ground level as flowers fade to promote further blooming. Once foliage dies back in fall, cut the plant back to just above the soil line.
Stella d’Oro Daylily Spacing
The Stella d’Oro Daylily grows twelve to eighteen inches tall with a clumping habit and a spread of twelve inches. For a mass planting, space plants twelve inches apart. Give plants more space if you are using them as individual specimens.
