Clumps of deep green, attractive foliage provide a backdrop for the stellar floral display of the Strawberry Candy daylily. Blooms are five inches in diameter and clear pink with a strawberry red eye and edge and golden-green throat. A prolific rebloomer, flowers appear in midsummer and again in late summer or fall. This cultivar is justifiably an award winner and one of the best performers among other daylilies.
Use the Strawberry Candy Daylily along a drive or walkway where plants with less tolerance of salt, urban pollution, or poor soil would suffer. Plant several together to form an interesting groundcover or in a row to form informal hedges or a border to a perennial bed. Position this daylily between small shrubs to break up the bed in a pleasant way.
Strawberry Candy Daylily Care
The Strawberry Candy Daylily prefers a site with full sunlight but can tolerate a degree of shade. It prefers a well-drained soil but can perform suitably well in most soil including sites with poor soil quality. Fertilize the daylily regularly during spring and summer to encourage vigor. Once established, the daylily is fairly drought tolerant but will provide the most spectacular display if it receives occasional watering during dry spells.
Cut off the scapes at ground level once all of the flowers on a scape have finished blooming to keep the plant looking tidy and encourage repeat blooming. Once a hard freeze kills back the foliage prune it off just above the soil line.
Strawberry Candy Daylily Spacing
The Strawberry Candy has a clumping habit and grows about a foot and a half tall and wide with flower stalks reaching a height of two feet. Space multiple plants about eighteen inches apart to form a mass grouping or give each a bit more space to keep them recognizable as individuals.
