The Sugar Blues Reblooming Bearded Iris has the unmistakable form of an Iris with both upright and drooping petals that all have a gentle ruffle. The petals are a deep blue and feature subtle yellow and white beards. This beauty blooms in the spring and reblooms again during the late summer so that you can enjoy the striking and sweet-smelling flowers twice. The fan-shaped flowers are perched on top of tall stems and are surrounded by green, sword-shaped leaves.
Feature this plant in borders, beds, or mass plantings. The flowers will attract pollinators, like bees, but the plants are generally deer and rabbit resistant. This cold-hardy Iris is easy to maintain and is a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 9. The Sugar Blues Reblooming Bearded Iris can handle most conditions as long as it is grown in well-draining soil because soggy roots are the one thing it cannot take on.
Sugar Blues Reblooming Bearded Iris Care
This Iris needs full sun to partial shade and requires at least 5 hours of sunlight. The Sugar Blues Reblooming Bearded Iris is not very picky about the soil type, but the soil must promote drainage. Water weekly or when the top couple of inches of soil dries out. Feed the plant using a 10-10-10 or 6-10-10 fertilizer in the early spring and again during the midsummer after the first bloom cycle is complete.
Deadhead the plant to help it prepare for the second flush of flowers. Remove dead growth at any time, but all growth can be trimmed back to about six inches in the fall. Routinely divide the plants every few years to prevent overcrowding and decrease the risk of certain pests.
Sugar Blues Reblooming Bearded Iris Spacing
The Sugar Blues Reblooming Bearded Iris will reach 32 to 38 inches tall and spread 12 to 24 inches. Plants can be spaced 12 to 22 inches apart to create a full, mass planting or give the Irises more room so they can gradually fill in.
