Growing Zones
Sugar Mountain Blue Honeysuckle (Lonicera caerulea) might remind you more of a raspberry or blueberry, but it is a sweetberry honeysuckle with bigger, more flavorful berries. Sugar Mountain is best grown with other honeysuckles to produce the most fruit. This honeysuckle makes an excellent and hardy hedge that doubles as an edible shrub. White flowers emerge in late spring and summer, followed by deep purple berries.
Blueberries can be hard to grow, especially if you don't have the right soil type. The versatile Sugar Mountain Blue Honeysuckle makes berry production much easier. You can plant them in vegetable gardens, orchards, or along borders or beds in your landscape. The mounded shrub reaches about 6 feet tall and wide.
Sugar Mountain Blue Honeysuckle Care
Plant Sugar Mountain Blue Honeysuckle in full or part sun in average soil types. The honeysuckle favors colder weather, growing in zones 3 through 6. Since the flowers appear on wood from the previous year, only prune after harvesting berries, not in early spring. It's best to leave your honeysuckle alone for the first three years before pruning. When you prune, trim no more than a fourth of the plant off.
Sugar Mountain Blue Honeysuckle Spacing
For a pretty and fruitful hedge, space your Sugar Mountain Blue Honeysuckle shrubs about 5 to 6 feet apart. This accounts for their full size once mature.
