If you’ve avoided Rose of Sharon in the past because you’ve heard that they can be invasive, your worries are over. The pleasant pinkish-purple double flowers of Sugar Tip Rose of Sharon don’t produce many seeds. When not in bloom, its deciduous variegated creamy-white and bluish-green foliage is eye-catching too.
Sugar Tip Gold Rose of Sharon blooms on new wood from late summer through fall and will add color to your garden when many other flowering plants have begun to fade. It can be used to create hedges, in perennial or shrub borders, as a specimen plant or in large containers. This plant grows best in full sun locations but can tolerate partial sun conditions too. Sugar Tip Rose of Sharon can be grown in gardens in USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9.
Sugar Tip Gold Rose of Sharon Care
This fast-growing shrub reaches 4 to 5 feet in height and width in an upright form at maturity. The blossoms attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds and it can tolerate urban pollution. This plant needs little to no maintenance but can be pruned in the fall or early spring since flower buds form on new growth. This plant is deer resistant.
Sugar Tip Gold Rose of Sharon Spacing
If desired, fertilize in early spring with a granular fertilizer formulated for woody plants. Space multiple plants 4 to 5 feet apart to avoid overcrowding.
