You know a plant like Sugartina 'Crystalina' Summersweet that has two "sweet" words in its name must smell wonderful. This Sugartina has fragrant white flowers that appear by mid-summer. The plant (Clethra alnifolia) is native to North America, so it adapts well to conditions in zones 4 through 9. The small shrub attracts butterflies but deer tend to ignore the fragrance.

Place one or more Sugartina 'Crystalina' Summersweet shrubs near a back patio or other seating area so you can enjoy its white flowers and sweet scent on summer evenings. At only about 3 feet high and wide, this little Sugartina can go in a container as the "thriller" plant or sit alongside a patio or sidewalk for a low border. It's a perfect choice for woodland or wildlife gardens. Its dark, glossy green leaves turn yellow in fall, extending the time it makes a statement in your garden.

Sugartina Crystalina Summersweet Care

Plant Sugartina 'Crystalina' Summersweet in full or part sun for best growth and flowering. It needs little care. Blooms appear on new growth, so you can prune your Sugartina for shape in late winter or early spring; it should not need heavy pruning. The plant has average water needs and can handle the damp soil of a woodland garden. You can add a granular fertilizer made for woody plants in early spring if desired.

Sugartina Crystalina Summersweet Spacing

Plant several Sugartina 'Crystalina' Summersweet for low-growing color and fragrance around your garden. If you place several together, space them about 3 to 4 feet apart from one center to another.
