Growing Zones
Wisteria plants are known for their reaching vines and lovely, fragrant flowers. The Summer Cascade™ Wisteria delivers on both points and is cold hardy, making it possible to enjoy this cultivar in areas most Wisteria cannot grow. The flowers start to bloom in June and are evenly spaced on racemes, or long stems. They open as a dark lavender and gradually lighten with age. The flowers turn into a unique seed pod by late summer.
Use the Summer Cascade™ Wisteria to cover a fence or arbor. The lush vines can engulf a structure in greenery and sweetly scented flowers. Medium green, oblong foliage gives the plant a full and dense appearance. This plant is deer resistant, so it is a good choice for areas where foraging animals are a problem. Grow this plant as a perennial in zones 4 through 8.
Summer Cascade™ Wisteria Care
This Wisteria needs full sun to thrive, but it can create shade underneath when grown on an arbor. Plant it in average soil that is moist but well drained. The Summer Cascade™ Wisteria has average water needs and can get by on rainfall, but give the plant water when it is hot or dry. Use a slow-release fertilizer in the spring to help the plant start the growing season strong.
The Summer Cascade™ Wisteria blooms on new wood, so shape the plant after the flowers fade. Trimming the plant before it blooms may reduce the number of flowers produced. In the fall, pack mulch around the base of the plant to keep out the winter chill in cold climates. Remove the mulch in the spring when new growth appears.
Summer Cascade™ Wisteria Spacing
This vining perennial needs a trellis or structure for support so you can control its form; it will reach 15 to 20 feet tall and 3 to 9 feet wide.
