The Summer Snowflake Viburnum or Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum is easy to grow and provides multi-season interest. Showy white flowers bloom in clusters during the summer and have a flattened look. The flowers complement dark green foliage with pronounced veining and gently serrated edges. By fall, the flowers give way to ornamental red berries.

This plant has a compact form and gradually spreads out. Use this medium-sized shrub to define a space or create a hedge. The Summer Snowflake Viburnum is good for foundation or border planting. This deciduous plant grows as a perennial in zones 5 through 8.

Summer Snowflake Viburnum Care

Plant the Summer Snowflake Viburnum in full to partial sun. Water when the top couple of inches of soil are dry. The soil should be rich, moist, and well drained. Apply a balanced fertilizer early in the spring before new growth appears.

This beauty blooms on new wood, so wait until the flowers fade to prune. Shape the plant as needed during fall.

Summer Snowflake Viburnum Spacing

This shrub features a compact and rounded form. Mature plants will grow 3 to 5 feet tall and wide. Space plants 3 to 5 feet apart when creating a hedge or mass planting.
