For some late-season color, why not try the Summer Sunshine Beadle's Tickseed? Flowering from September to October, this Coreopsis palustris produces a mass of bright yellow blooms with brown centers, reminiscent of summer sunshine. Growing to around four feet, Summer Sunshine Beadle's Tickseed is easy to grow and low maintenance.
A native perennial of North America, Summer Sunshine Beadle's Tickseed is loved by pollinators and is a great late source of nectar. Once settled in, it needs minimal care and even has great disease resistance. Furthermore, it is clump forming and is slow to spread. This tickseed is ideal for planting en masse for maximum impact.
Summer Sunshine Beadle's Tickseed Care
For the best flowers, this tickseed needs to be grown in full sun. It likes medium to wet soils and can even be incorporated into a rain garden. Unsurprisingly, it likes to be watered regularly until it has become established. Fertilizing it isn’t usually necessary. However, you can give Summer Sunshine Beadle's Tickseed a light application of a balanced fertilizer when new growth appears.
Deadheading the flowers as they fade will help encourage new blooms to appear. After the first frost, you can prune the stems back to around 6 - 8 inches above the soil and apply a mulch to insulate the roots.
Summer Sunshine Beadle's Tickseed Spacing
When fully grown, Summer Sunshine Beadle's Tickseed can reach a height and width of 3 to 4 feet. When planting out as part of a group, a plant spacing of around 36 inches is advisable.
