What’s not to love about a low growing, trailing, heat and drought resistant annual? Summer Wave Large Blue Wishbone Flower gives you all this and more with its easy maintenance versatility. Sun or shade, Check! Deer resistant, Check! High humidity tolerance, Check! This true blue, orchid-like bloom will bring that coveted blue color palette to your spring and summer gardens and containers.
Native to Africa and Asia, Zones 10a through 11b, this annual in Zones 2-9 will appreciate being set out after danger of the last frost. Its light green foliage is fragrant, and its flowers are reminiscent of snapdragons. The stamens join together in the throat of the flower in the shape of a wishbone hence the moniker given to it. Summer Wave hybrids are less prone to powdery mildew making this truly an easy maintenance annual for your garden.
Summer Wave Large Blue Wishbone Flower Care
Setting out new plants in spring after danger of first frost is over, giving them good well-draining soil with average pH of 5.5 to 6.2, slightly acidic, will guarantee you a spring to summer show of flowers. Top dress with compost, water only when extremely dry, fertilize in ground plants once a season and on a regular schedule for container plants, and that’s it! This improved hybrid will not self-seed so cleaning up at the end of the season is easy.
Deadheading is not necessary as this plant cleans up after itself, but it will enjoy a mid-season clipping to keep it fresh and remove the calyxes, promoting branching, renewed blooming and generally keep it in great shape. Some gardeners like the contrasting lime green calyx and forgo the clipping, it is entirely up to you and your preference which direction you will take.
Summer Wave Large Blue Wishbone Flower Spacing
As a low growing, slightly mounding/trailing annual, keep torenias in the foreground of your garden or containers and hanging baskets. Reaching only about 10 to12 inches high with a spread of 8 to 10 inches, this annual can also trail up to 36 inches if not trimmed back. Space about 8 to 10 inches apart. Pair with chartreuse ipomoeas, bacopas, SuperTunias, red impatiens or euphorbias to really take advantage of that intense two-toned blue color.
