Barberry shrubs are a great way to add colorful foliage to your garden for three seasons of the year. Sunjoy® Gold Pillar Barberry provides an ever-changing palette of color. The new growth in spring emerges a soft orange that quickly matures to the bright golden shade of its name. The autumn brings another color change to a fiery reddish orange before the leaves drop for the winter. The compact columnar shape makes this shrub a gorgeous focal point in any foliage-forward planting scheme.
Gold Pillar Barberry has all of the outstanding traits of previous cultivars. It is highly disease and pest resistant, as well as nearly impervious to browsing deer. The brilliant yellow color of the foliage is not prone to fading or scorching and looks great paired with hot season annuals in a container planting. The inconspicuous flowers of Sunjoy® Gold Pillar are sterile, ensuring that this shrub is not invasive and can be planted in the home garden with no worries.
Sunjoy® Gold Pillar Barberry Care
Provide full sun and well-draining soil for Barberry to thrive in your garden. This shrub is not particular about soil pH or texture and grows well in soil with low fertility, like in new housing developments or public spaces. Mulch the root zone early in the spring with a 2-3 inch layer of organic compost to boost fertility in the soil and ensure moisture retention near the roots. Water newly planted Barberry 1-2 times a week with one inch of water in total. This will help the shrubs get off to a good start and form a strong and healthy root system.
Gold Pillar Barberry has a naturally compact shape that requires very little pruning. Early in the spring is a good time to lightly prune away any winter-damaged branches. Barberry can be cut back severely to rejuvenate the overall shape. This intense pruning needs to be done early in the spring so that the plant can recover in time for winter dormancy. Barberry is a deciduous shrub whose leaves can be left to decompose in place if they are healthy. Any diseased or pest-infested leaves need to be removed in the fall and disposed of in the trash or burned. This helps to break the reinfestation cycle for the following year.
Sunjoy® Gold Pillar Barberry Spacing
The mature height for Gold Pillar is 4 feet with a narrow spread of 2 feet. Space the plants 2 feet apart on the center when planting with other perennials or shrubs. Closer spacing of 18 inches can be used when growing Gold Pillar as an informal hedge. A pot with at least a 12-inch diameter can be used for potting up a young Barberry.
Restricted States: IN, MA, ME, NH, NY and VT.
