Sunjoy Mini Maroon® Barberry is the one you have been waiting for. The naturally mounding growth habit forms a perfect ball without the need for heavy pruning. The sterile flowers keep Mini Maroon from becoming invasive in your garden, while the deep, glossy maroon foliage looks attractive from early spring to late fall.
Berberis thunbergii is renowned for being a workhorse in just about any garden setting. This hybrid variety will tolerate urban pollution, temporary drought conditions, salt spray, rabbits, and deer browsing. The small, round foliage stays clean all season and is highly resistant to rust and mildew diseases. Mini Maroon® Barberry makes a great edging plant at the front of a garden border or a filler in a large mixed seasonal planter. Combine the deep maroon colors of this shrub with the acid lime color of Sweet Caroline Lime Sweet Potato for instant drama at your front door.
Sunjoy Mini Maroon® Barberry Care
Barberry requires a full sun location to maintain its deep coloring and glossy foliage. Well-draining soil is also a must. Average soil texture and fertility are acceptable. Mulch the plant with 3-4 inches of organic compost after planting to ensure that the roots stay cool and moist during the hot summer. Fertilize Barberry lightly in the early spring with a balanced fertilizer containing an NPK ratio around 5-5-5. Granular slow-release formulations work well and slowly feed the plant every time you water during the spring and summer. Container-grown Barberry may require daily watering depending on the overall size of the pot. Large planters stay damp longer than small pots.
The Sunjoy Mini Maroon® Barberry naturally has a very compact shape that needs little, if any, regular pruning. When shaping is necessary, lightly prune back individual branches anytime during the summer. Cutting into the oldest and woodiest branches is only recommended to rejuvenate the shrub.
Sunjoy Mini Maroon ® Barberry Spacing
The overall size of Mini Maroon® is a stout 3 feet by 3 feet. When planting in a mixed hedge, space each shrub 30 inches apart center on center to make a dense screen. This shrub also performs well in containers. A single plant will need a container with at least a 12-inch diameter or 5-gallon capacity.
Restricted States: IN, MA, ME, NH, NY and VT.
