Sunjoy Plum Pillar™ Barberry is built for tight spaces that still demand bold color. The narrow, upright form rises 3–4 feet tall while holding a slim 2–3 foot width, creating vertical structure without crowding nearby plants. Foliage emerges a crimson red at the tips and deepens to saturated plum as it matures, maintaining strong color from spring through fall. Unlike broader barberries that sprawl, this selection keeps a clean column, making it far easier to tuck into compact foundations or modern borders.

Part of the Sunjoy® series from Proven Winners ColorChoice, Berberis thunbergii ‘JBN 17-001’ was selected for foliage intensity and uniform habit. Small thorns discourage deer browsing, which makes it useful along property edges or near woodland settings. It readily tolerates urban stress, reflected heat, and roadside salt. Yellow spring flowers are subtle, followed by small red berries, though it’s primarily grown for foliage.

Sunjoy Plum Pillar™ Barberry Care

Plant Sunjoy Plum Pillar™ in full sun to preserve the richest purple tones. Any well-drained soil works, including sandy or rocky ground, with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Avoid low spots where water lingers after rain. Water deeply at planting and continue regular irrigation through the first growing season; once roots establish, it tolerates dry conditions with minimal supplemental watering. Apply a slow-release fertilizer formulated for woody plants in early spring if growth slows.

This shrub maintains its columnar shape naturally. If shaping is desired, trim lightly in late spring after new growth expands, avoiding cuts into thick interior wood unless removing an entire branch. Wear gloves when pruning due to thorns. No special winter protection is needed in zones 4–9.

Sunjoy Plum Pillar™ Barberry Spacing

Space 2–3 feet apart in landscape installations to form a narrow hedge or repeating vertical accent. In mass plantings, the repeated vertical lines create rhythm without heaviness. Combine Sunjoy Plum Pillar™ Barberry with boxwoods for structure and soften the base with coral bells or blue fescue grass for textural contrast. For large decorative containers (>20"), use one shrub as a thriller element surrounded by low plantings. We often suggest this barberry when a client wants height and drama but doesn’t have room for a wide shrub.
