The tricolor variegation of green, white, and pink on Sunjoy Sequins™ Barberry is dependable from spring to late summer and does not revert to solid green. This is one of the few Barberry varieties that will tolerate and thrive in shaded areas of the garden. The bright colors will glow when planted amongst the deep greens and silvery blues of hostas and ferns. Combining this flashy shrub with other plants may seem challenging, but Sequins™ Barberry plays well with others surprisingly well and is perfect for planting in large drifts of three-season color.
Sunjoy™ Barberry varieties are considered to be noninvasive and produce either far less seed than older types or seed that is sterile. Maintenance is low and there is little risk that browsing deer will damage the spiny branches. Sequins™ Barberry tolerates urban pollution, salt spray at the seaside, as well as minor foot traffic. Plant a low-growing hedge of Barberry to define a walkway or driveway. Include it as a thriller in a large planter on the deck or patio to add some drama and sparkle.
Sunjoy Sequins™ Barberry Care
Sequins™ Barberry will thrive in both part shade and full sun with little risk of burned leaves or reverting branches. Average garden soil is preferred, although Barberry happily grows in heavy clay that is well draining year round. Slightly acidic to alkaline pH levels are acceptable. Barberry is a very drought-tolerant plant when it is fully established. Water 1-2 times a week for the first year with one inch of water total per week. This deep watering strategy will encourage deeper-growing roots that can withstand periods of hot and dry weather. Apply a granular, extended-release fertilizer formulated for shrubs in the early spring. The single application will provide nutrients through the growing season.
Sunjoy Sequins™ is a compact shrub that does not require much attention to keep it tidy. Light pruning in the early spring may be needed to remove winter-damaged branches. Cutting into the woodiest of stems should only be done for rejuvenation purposes. Complete any rejuvenation pruning in the spring, so the shrub has an entire growing season to recover before winter dormancy.
Sunjoy Sequins™ Barberry Spacing
The ultimate height for Sequins™ Barberry is 3 feet with a spread of 4 or more feet. Multiple shrubs will need a spacing at 40 inches on the center to allow plenty of air circulation.
Restricted States: IN, MA, ME, NH, NY and VT.
