Nothing is more refreshing than the color of the Sunjoy® Tangelo™ Barberry. This is one deciduous shrub that may appear light and delicate but can adapt and perform exceptionally well in almost any garden setting. The small round leaves are simply edged in lime green giving the whole shrub a glowing effect. Berberis thunbergii “O’Byrne” is the scientific name for this strong yet compact variety, although Tangelo™ is infinitely more descriptive.
Tangelo™ Barberry has proven to be resistant to wheat rust as well as other fungal and mildew diseases. The small but very sharp thorns on Barberry do a great job of keeping deer from browsing on the foliage. Barberry can be planted as a beautiful deterrent to keep animals or humans out of an area, such as along the foundation of the house, along a not-so-secure fence line, or in front of a wild part of your property. Tangelo™ is the right size to be a stunning thriller for a mixed seasonal or permanent container for the patio or deck.
Sunjoy® Tangelo™ Barberry Care
Barberry will grow well in almost any soil type as long as the drainage is excellent year-round. Standing water around the root zone in the winter will cause root rot and eventual death of the shrub. Adding compost to heavy clay soil will improve drainage and soil texture. Tangelo™ Barberry will develop the brightest foliage color when planted in a spot with at least 6 hours of full sun. Water newly planted shrubs 1-2 times weekly with 1 inch of total water. Use drip irrigation or soaker hoses for long rows of hedging or large beds of shrubs; this will make the job quick and deliver water efficiently to the root zone. Fertilize annually in the spring with an all-purpose controlled-release feed.
The Sunjoy® line of Barberry requires very little maintenance to keep them looking their best. The mounding and slow-growing habit of Tangelo™ makes pruning purely optional. This shrub can be left in its natural form or trimmed into a colorful topiary or hedge in place of Boxwood. A light pruning of any winter-damaged stems in early spring will get Tangelo™ in good shape for the growing season.
Sunjoy® Tangelo™ Barberry Spacing
The overall height and spread for Tangelo™ is 4 feet. Space shrubs 42 inches apart on center when planting them in a hedge. This will ensure dense cover quickly. Tangelo™ will require a container with at least a 16-inch diameter or 7-gallon capacity for permanent planting.
Restricted States: IN, MA, ME, NH, NY and VT.
