Growing Zones
You can plant Sunjoy® Todo Barberry in your garden and be assured that it is not only good looking but noninvasive. The yellow flowers are sterile and do not produce seed like past varieties. This diminutive, deep maroon shrub can be used as an accent plant in the garden bed or patio container, giving you many years of carefree enjoyment.
Barberry is one of the most low-maintenance shrubs available and works well in both the garden and a container. The smaller size of Todo Barberry makes it a top pick for an edging plant or as a filler in a mixed seasonal planter. Todo is evergreen in the upper end of its hardiness zones. The deep cherry cola-colored foliage does not fade or green when grown in partial shade. Like most Barberries, Todo has sharp thorns that not only are an excellent deterrent for browsing deer and rabbits but can be a nasty surprise for any pets or children that play around the shrubs.
Sunjoy® Todo Barberry Care
Choose a planting location with at least 6 hours of full sunlight and well-draining soil. Amend any heavy soil with 1-2 inches of compost before planting, and then mulch the root zone with 2-3 inches of shredded arborist chips, leaves, or compost annually in the spring. Water the shrubs well for the first year. Water your plant if there is less than one inch of natural precipitation a week. Fertilize in early spring with a granular, slow-release fertilizer with a balanced NPK ratio.
Sunjoy® Todo Barberry will not require regular pruning for maintenance. This dwarf shrub maintains a ball-like shape naturally and grows slowly. If any shoots need to be cut back, do this anytime during the summer. Always plant Barberry in containers with plants that require similar conditions. Barberry will not grow well with shade plants like hostas and ferns but will thrive in a container with hot season annuals or drought-tolerant perennials.
Sunjoy® Todo Barberry Spacing
The tiny Todo Barberry will reach a mature height and spread of 1-2 feet. Space plants 20 inches apart on the center to provide quick cover as a tiny hedge or ground cover. A container with at least a 10-inch diameter is recommended if planting Todo on its own.
Restricted States: IN, MA, ME, NH, NY and VT.
