Sunmagic® Vintage Hot Red Coneflower delivers a clean, pure-red coneflower look on a compact plant that doesn’t need staking or constant cleanup to stay presentable. It matures around 18–24 inches tall and 18–24 inches wide, forming a mounded clump that holds an even canopy of blooms from July through September. Many red coneflowers can read a little muddy in the garden, but this selection keeps a clearer red tone with a deeper red center for contrast. We like it most for massing, because the strong branching makes a drift look full from the first flush onward.
This Echinacea hybrid is an herbaceous perennial chosen for heavy crown branching, high flower count, and dependable summer performance. The open flowers are busy with bees and butterflies, and the cones can be left late in the season to add texture and support songbirds. Use it to drive hot color through a modern meadow planting, to tighten up the front-to-middle of a border, or to anchor a patio container with bold color. It’s also a reliable cut flower, especially when harvested as the petals first extend.
Sunmagic® Vintage Hot Red Coneflower Care
Grow in full sun to part sun, with the best flowering in full sun. Plant in fertile, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, about 5.5–7.0. Good drainage is the key to overwintering well in colder zones.
Water deeply and regularly the first growing season to build roots, then water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry; established plants tolerate short dry spells. Feed in early spring as new growth starts, using an organic or slow-release fertilizer so growth stays sturdy. The plant dies back in winter and returns from the crown in spring, often holding the dark centers after frost if you leave stems standing.
Deadhead through midsummer to keep buds forming and maintain a neat look, then stop late in the season if you want the cones to remain for winter interest. Cut back old stems near ground level in late winter before new shoots emerge. If clumps thicken after a few seasons, divide in spring to keep flowering strong.
Sunmagic® Vintage Hot Red Coneflower Spacing
Space plants 18–24 inches apart so the mounds grow together without trapping humidity. In containers, use a 14–16 inch pot and a fast-draining mix so the crown can dry between waterings. In the landscape, pair it with yarrow and sea thrift to echo warm tones while keeping the planting drought-smart once established. For patio pots, combine it with snapdragons and sweet potato vines so the red flowers sit above a dense skirt of color and foliage.
